We're conditioned to look at the final product or overall service to determine whether or not we see the value. In other words, is this worth it? Headshots have crossed the line from gratuitous to necessary and while we may not question needing one, the price attached to them is still a hot button issue.
Every time I search for something I need to spend money on, I almost always end up doing a side by side comparison of my favorite choices to decide which has the most value for me.
For products, and some services, this makes sense but there is so much that can go on behind the scenes that I miss the true value that goes beyond how much the inherent cost.
If I were to try and sell my services based on the images alone I would be doing myself and potential clients a disservice. The headshots on my website and social media are the final result of a collaborative process that's a culmination of a decade of experience. On top of that, I want clients to know they can expect top notch service and communication that reinforces their confidence in front of the camera.
That last part may sound arrogant but it's based in humility. After a decade of doing this I know that if someone is looking solely on price then there are many more options out there for them. I want to work with every single person but the reality is that's not going to happen based on a number of factors. The service I provide is based on the total experience that results in amazing headshots while enjoying the process. That isn't easy or something you can figure out over night. As the saying goes, good, fast and cheap; pick two.
Which ultimately leads to the question, what is this worth to you? I can offer everything under the sun to entice clients but it's always up to each person to decide how much of themselves they want to invest. Just like with investing in education or physical fitness, the more of yourself you bring to the table the more you get out of the experience. The same goes for your headshots because you want these to represent you with all your complexities as an individual.
The value you place on yourself will absolutely determine the quality of your headshot which will translate to more confidence for you and your career goals. The money you invest is pennies on the dollar compared to what the images will bring in for your goals. Once you decide what your professional image is worth then how much it costs is no longer a barrier.
